The Trait That Beats Credentials Every Time
Trust isn’t built on titles
I used to believe credentials were everything.
The degrees. The job titles. The perfect resume.
In my early career as an engineer, those were my benchmarks for trust.
But after 20 years of building businesses, backing founders, and investing in people, I’ve learned something that changed everything:
Credentials don’t matter as much as character.
What Actually Moves the Needle
You can train almost anyone in tools, tactics, or strategy.
You can teach them how to use frameworks, follow systems, and execute a business plan.
But here’s what you can’t teach:
Accountability
Integrity
Follow-through
These are the intangibles that determine outcomes in real estate, in business, and in life.
And they’re often invisible on a resume.

The Mistake Most People Make
I’ve seen founders with no formal experience outperform seasoned professionals.
I’ve passed on candidates with stacked resumes—because they couldn’t follow through.
Why? Because success isn’t built on polish.
It’s built on trust, grit, and consistency.
In investing and leadership, we tend to overvalue credentials and undervalue character.
But when things get tough (and they always do), it’s not the degree that pulls you through.
It’s the person who shows up, communicates clearly, takes ownership, and does what they said they would do.
That’s who I want to work with.
And that’s who I want to bet on.
We all start with assumptions about what success looks like. But real growth? It comes when we’re willing to let go of the old rules and look deeper.

Until next time,
Jon
